Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our steel frames, shipping, and the Rivendell philosophy.

What makes Rivendell steel frames different from modern carbon bikes?

We prioritize comfort, longevity, and timeless aesthetics. Our frames are built using high-quality lugged steel, designed with longer wheelbases and higher handlebars to ensure a smooth ride that lasts a lifetime rather than a few racing seasons.

How do I choose the correct frame size?

Unlike modern sloping geometry, we use Public Based Index (PBH) measurements. We recommend measuring your inseam while wearing shoes to find your ideal standover height, as our frames are designed to be ridden with more seatpost showing for maximum comfort.

Do you ship your bicycles and components internationally?

Yes, we ship globally. Complete bicycles are partially disassembled and packed securely to ensure they arrive safely. Please note that international customers are responsible for any local customs duties or VAT upon arrival.

What is your return policy on parts and accessories?

We accept returns on unused, uninstalled items in their original packaging within 30 days of purchase. Please note that we cannot accept returns on framesets or custom-built bicycles once they have been assembled or ridden.

Are Rivendell bikes compatible with modern shifting components?

While we are famous for our friction shifting setups, many of our frames feature standard spacing that allows for a variety of drivetrain options. However, we always recommend simple, durable components that align with our 'keep it simple' ethos.

How long does it take to receive a custom-built bicycle?

For complete builds, the lead time typically ranges from 4 to 8 weeks depending on component availability and our current workshop queue. We take the time to tune and test every bike before it leaves our Walnut Creek headquarters.
